Commercial photography taken inside Japanese train systems requires prior permission (sometimes with a fee). This includes the ticket areas of the stations, train interiors and platform areas as well as any exterior images where the train station or train is the main part of the photo.
About 70 percent of Japan’s railway network is owned and operated by the Japan Railways Group commonly known as JR Group, but smaller railway companies also require this permission for any commercial photography involving the train interiors and their stations.
Content of this nature is not suitable for commercial use without the appropriate permission.
Content featuring train interiors is also not suitable for editorial without permission.
For a list of some of the Japanese Train Systems that require fees or have specific application guidelines for obtaining permission, please review the following article. Please note this is not a complete list.
