Churches (general) https://wiki.gettyimages.com/churches-general/ Wed, 17 Sep 2014 18:56:51 +0000 http://wiki.gettyimages.com/?p=2007 As places of worship, churches can represent stunning and impressive feats of architecture spanning history. Since church buildings themselves range from ancient to more modern in design, it is useful to understand how they currently function, especially if the intent is to create imagery that features the location. Some churches operate exclusively as places of worship. Some function as museums outside of service hours, and others may be privately owned, serving purely as an attraction which may include ticketed entry and/or charge service fees.

If you know you are going to visit a particular church, it is always a good idea to check if the location posts a photography/shooting policy on its website, or information on the appropriate person to contact with questions. Churches that are more popular attractions may readily post policies at the actual location, or at least have an attendant present who could help direct your questions.

For additional and related information, please refer to specific church entires within the wiki, as well our general entries on Locations, and Museums & Ticketed Locations.

Locations (general) https://wiki.gettyimages.com/locations-general/ Mon, 11 Mar 2013 20:08:38 +0000 http://wiki.gettyimages.com/?p=1467 As a general rule, permission should always be sought when shooting on private property. A property release is required for any content intended for commercial use.  Additionally, consent or a permit is required to create imagery for editorial purposes.

Another general rule is to seek consent from places charging an admission fee or requiring a ticket purchase for entry: these places usually require special permission for commercial photography, and are therefore problematic in all collections.  These locations should be completely avoided in royalty-free content, while some may be suitable for rights-managed or editorial collections with the proper consent.  Some locations may be free to enter (e.g. certain museums or historical properties), but imagery taken inside may still be problematic. Do your research prior to shooting.

Content showing a street scene that features the exterior of many locations and buildings may be suitable for commercial use. Exterior shots are generally acceptable as editorial content, provided the structures featured within the shots abide by editorial standards (i.e. no copyrighted works). Where architectural works are permissible in editorial use content, the architect(s) of such works should be credited in the descriptions accompanying the submission of such content.

When shooting private residences, even if off the grounds of the property, a property release should be sought for all content available for commercial use.

Additionally (and out of an abundance of caution), we ask that you refrain from shooting and submitting both creative and editorial content that features any architecture, buildings, or properties designed by Le Corbusier. This content is simply off-limits.

Please see other entries about specific locations you are interested in shooting.

Museums & Ticketed Locations https://wiki.gettyimages.com/museums/ Wed, 20 Feb 2013 19:44:54 +0000 http://wiki.gettyimages.com/?p=1353 If you pay admission, ask permission.

Generally speaking, museums and other places that charge admission are not suitable for licensing, and typically post their shoot policies on-site or online for review.

Exterior shots of museums may be suitable for editorial use. Some museums allow images of the entryway, pre-gallery, for editorial use only.  Please research each museum online and also ask museum staff what is allowable.

Exterior shots featuring museums may be suitable within street scenes or vista shots for commercial use, provided the location plays a small role and is not a main focus.
